Lai Mohammed, the Minister of information and culture says the removal of oil subsidy is due to the fact that Nigeria is economically impoverished. While speaking with the State House correspondents following the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja on 18thMay, the Minister said that Nigeria is on the breadline.


The Minister attributed the current economic problem to the Nigeria’s poor state. In his words, “Nigeria is broke- Pure and simple”. He claimed that the present problem in Nigeria is not the subsidy removal.

According to the Minister, Nigeria’s economy is dwindling. He said that Nigeria is bereft of resources, the foreign exchange to import refined fuel products. He appreciated Nigerians and urged them to adjust to the decision of subsidy removal even though it is painful to do so.
He said that Nigerian should acknowledge the fact that the government shoulders the responsibility to take difficult decisions sometimes. He ended his speech by saying that it is not always the popularity.
